Community Health Outreach programme

The community health Department of the Hospital is a liason with Govt project, community and the hospital. Fully committed full time team of staff is working under this department.

1. Intergrated Counseling and Testing Centre
HIV counselling and testing services are a key entry point to prevention of HIV infection and to treatment and care of people who are infected with HIV. When availing counselling and testing services people can access accurate information about HIV prevention and care, and undergo an HIV test in supportive and confident environment. People who are found HIV negative are supported with information and counselling to reduce risk and remain HIV negative. People who are found HIV positive are provided psycho socio support and linked to treatment care.

Main functions of ICTC are :
1. Conducting HIV diagnostic tests
2. Providing basic information on the modes of HIV transmission, and promoting behavioural
change to reduce vulnerability.
3. Link people with other HIV prevention, care and treatment services


   a. Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program is the state-run Tuberculosis control initiative of the Government of India . It    incorporates the principles of directly observed treatment short course (DOTS ) and the global TB control strategy of World Health organization. The program provides, free of cost, quality anti-tubercular drugs across the country through government and private-sector DOTS-providers. Holy Cross hospital Chikmagalur is conducting this programme from2008 onwards. The main purpose is to reach the unreached population, treating Tb cases and transforming their lives.On an average every month 2- 3 new patients avail the treatment.National Tuberculosis day is celebrated with mass awareness programme.Holy Cross Hospital is one of the best performing Hospital in TB in this District.

The diagnosis is made primarily by sputum microscopy, which is made available free of cost to patients at designated microscopy centres. Sputum microscopy services are provided at the designated Microscopy Centres (DMCs) having adequate out patient attendance, trained microscopist and facilities for sputum microscopy. Annually around 600 sputum samples are screened and around 50 positive cases are identified.

3. Axshya Project
Project Axshya builds a new dimension to TB control in India – community ‘ownership’ through civil society led public health programming. Through its innovative interventions focusing on Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilisation, Project Axshya is strengthening the Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) to achieve its objective of Universal Access to TB services.

All the villages at Chikmagalur Taluk is covered by Holy Cross Hospital, Chikmagalur. Every month 5 awareness programms are conducted in each village regarding TB awareness programme. Minimum 30 – 35 people participate in the programme.The health worker visit families and identifies patients with chronic cough and encourages them to undergo sputum examination. Minimum of 10-15 sputum samples are collected from the Symptomatic cases every month.
In-order to give the treatment in-time as well as to do the follow-up, we collaborate with ANMs, Anganwadi workers, school teachers and ASHA workers. Around 400 – 450 Home to home TB awareness programme is being done in a month .
